1. David Rossi was born in 1956 in Commack, Long Island, New York. He grew up his mother Lisa, Aunt Rebecca and Uncle Chris. He supposedly has a half-brother upstate (or so he’s heard.)
2. He grew up literally across the street from Ray Finnegan. He can’t remember when they met but knows it was probably his fault. Normally, when they got into trouble (and yes, they got into a lot of trouble) it was usually his fault. Ray was the one more willing to take it on the chin. David never met a problem he didn’t try and talk his way out of.
3. He was twelve when ten year old Emma Taylor moved in down the street and entered his and Ray’s life. From then on, Emma called the shots. Ray and David were just enforcers.
4. He will deny it till the day he dies, but he can remember going to bed hungry or wearing neighborhood hand-me-downs. Although the neighborhood never treated him or his family different, he always took it as being the ‘poor ones.’ There was nothing he hated more on earth then wearing Ray’s old winter coats or the fact Ray never mentioned it.
5. He grew up wishing a local business named Salvatore Barrone was his father. He even entertained the idea he was (Barrone was known for his ‘kids’, and the ugly truth was his mother was known for her boyfriends.)
6. He was thirteen when he started hanging out at Mr. Barrone’s restaurant, claiming to be fifteen. He was always a tough kid and a fighter both of which proved very useful. When Barrone found out Rossi was thirteen, he gave him the best ass-kicking he ever received. He got to keep the job.
7. When Emma found out he was working for Barrone, something changed in their relationship. He’s not quite sure how, why or if it was gradually or all at once. There were a few times he saw fear in her eyes and he couldn’t tell if she was afraid for him or of him.
8. He’s seen that look in all three of his ex-wives’ eyes and that’s when the marriage ended. Every time.
9. He was nineteen when a routine job ended up with an undercover cop killed. To keep him safe, Barrone advised him to join the Marines. It was when Dave was on the plane out of Commack that he decided to put everything behind him. Including Emma, and Ray.
10. He enlisted twice in the military, serving with distinction and establishing a proficiency in investigation and jurisprudence. His first wife (Meredith) was a commander’s daughter. It was over within a year, with both of them deciding to write it off as ‘a last childish fling.’ Partially because it was so awkward afterwards, he chose not to reenlist for a third term.
11. He was recruited by the FBI organized crime division. He met his second wife (Erin) while working in New York under the RICO mess. The operation later ended up in them taking on the Mafia Commission. His work with finding informants ready to crack gained the attention of Max Ryan and his merry band of misfits. He was transferred to the BSU the same day Anthony Salerno was convicted.
12. Understand: Dave Rossi absolutely loved everything about working in the BSU. They were considered the best minds of the bureau, had to fight to get anything from trust to recognition and most of the time: they fought for their very survival. He has always loved proving the bastards wrong about him.
13. There’s a part of him: a selfish, dark, bitter part that knows everything he’s earned and gotten has been won from the edge of a fist. He doesn’t want to think what that says about him.
14. He was married most of the time he was in the BSU (although it stopped neither the dating, nor the flirting.) He and Erin were perfect for each other in the way they both knew what they wanted and while it wasn’t each other, they hated nights that found their beds empty.
15. He has three tattoos: one to signify his place as a founder of the BAU, one over the bullet wound that should’ve killed him and one for the bullet that did kill someone.
16. Outside the bunker, Dave Rossi would have torn the throat out of anyone who talked against his team. Inside the bunker, flirted mercilessly with Des, fought with Ryan and tortured “the kid.” He liked being the loner of a group of loners.
17. He was last into the squad and first out: he tries not to view that as him washing out. It wasn’t. It just felt that way.
18. He took early retirement for the same reason he started hanging out in Barrone’s restaurant: he wanted more then what was offered him where he was. It wasn’t the stress of the job or the nightmares.
19. He is both protective and harsh to Gideon and Reid for the same reason he never slept with Emma: he doesn’t know how to treat people without natural defenses.
20. Rossi will never forgive Gideon. Not for leaving, but for letting his hands grow cold, losing faith in himself and willingly allowing himself to be Frank’s last victim. Basically for proving him right.
21. Hotch reminds him a lot of himself and it terrifies the hell out him.
22. He married his latest wife (Celia) after she encouraged him to retire and write books. She burned through his money faster than he was making it but it didn’t matter because she was beautiful.
23. He only feels guilty about sensationalizing the crimes he helped stopped but he won’t deny, they’ve made him a very rich man. To quote a great man, it feels good putting money in his mother’s mailbox.
24. The only nightmares he gets are for the cop he killed.
25. He keeps score.
